The Effects of Color in Jewelry

stockxpertcom_id1096231_size1.jpgAs you begin to think of creating jewelry pieces for spring, consider the effects that color might have on those who may wear your jewelry — even if it’s just you.

Have you ever wondered about the effects that certain colors can have on people? Well, Lori Greenberg over at Bead Nerd certain has. She found a great article on color psychology that explains the effects certain colors can have on us. Check out the post that links the article here.

I really do think there’s more to this color thing than meets the eye. With jewelry, I like to see colors be balanced well (particularly when there are several colors present in a jewelry piece), and if the colors seem asymmetrical in any way, it’s like it flips a switch in my brain and I’m less drawn to it.  As I create my own jewelry, color balance is really important to me, particularly as it relates to necklaces and bracelets.  If I use a focal bead in a necklace or bracelet, I like to complement it by having surrounding beads with colors found in the focal bead or with colors that contrast well with the focal bead.  To me, this adds color balance to the piece.  And for the artsy-schmartsy color rebel in us that hides in the shadows of our creativity, we would do well to consult the color wheel.  The color wheel will show you which colors contrast well, and you can put together some visually beautiful jewelry pieces when you’ve got colors that work well together.

Remember not to overlook the color value as you work on your spring creations.  If you sell jewelry, note which colors seem to sell the best.  The article on color psychology might help you better understand why certain colors sell well.

Happy spring beading!
