My mother-in-law, God love her, took well to the idea of beading. But she’d never realized that there is more to beading than just stringing beads on wire. She is a busy lady, who’s always on the move, so when she comes into town it’s sometimes challenging to get her to sit still long enough to offer her some real instruction. This is her first real project, and I think she did a great job!
I never realized how fun it could be to sit with someone for hours and just bead, but my mother-in-law is an eager learner and was really patient as I gave her instructions on this gorgeous necklace. It’s a simply lovely project I’m sure you’ll want to try.
The focal bead in this necklace is a real eye grabber: an onyx and 14K gold pendant, which my mother-in-law paired with additional onyx beads, gold beads and black and gold glass beads. Color combination is key here, and I think Mother did a great job in sequencing these beads. You can choose an elegant toggle clasp, or a simple magnetic clasp (which we used). You’ll also need to grab your gold beading wire, gold crimp beads, chain-nose pliers, crimping pliers, wire cutters (or a nail clipper, which Mother preferred). Once you’ve found a suitable sequence that highlights this wonderful onyx pendant, set your beads up on your design board, and decide how long you’ll want your necklace to be. String your beads on your wire, attach your clasp and wear it with confidence!
This was a great effort for my mother-in-law’s first necklace, but she made a mistake that I didn’t discover till later. This is a lesson on how important it is to carefully observe your piece before stringing it up. Can you spot the mistake?

There’s an extra black & gold bead on the right-hand side of the necklace. Far away, you can’t really tell. I had to enlarge the picture to see it. She did a GREAT job! I’ve only beaded once in my life….& all I did was string it on wire. The lady at the bead shop did the twisting & typing. Yeah right…..I don’t have that talent! Nervous to try, but would love to learn. X-mas is coming soon, & there’s a lot of ladies in my family.
