Guaracavusu Bracelet

Guaracavusu BraceletThe creator of this piece says: This piece is made of natural, non-viable seeds from the Amazon, fresh water pearls, sterling silver charms, chain and findings. The seeds are attached with head pins to a thick chain to form this unique charm bracelet. Inspired by the Guarasavusu bird of the Amazon rainforest that has brown, yellow, and white feathers.

About the Artist: Leda Bittencourt

My journey into the world of jewelry began in college when I used to make some very simple pieces of jewelry to sell to my classmates for extra money. I was 18. A palm reader told me I would be fulfilled doing some artistic work. Even though I have never taken that seriously I have kept that “feeling” deep inside and from time to time I created something new just for pleasure. When I came to USA in 2000, I was homesick all the time, and my husband advised me to start working with something that really could give some pleasure. Working with my hands would be the way. I am self taught and wanted to create things as unique, exotic, and colorful as my home country. Something that could have history, and have a kind of social responsibility. Working with alternative materials is the way I have found to do that. Since then I’ve been incorporating Amazon seeds in my work. These seeds often come with fabulous tales about their origins and legendary uses, and carry with them the concept of sustainability and of respect for the environment. The purchase of these seeds is an alternative income generation, and helps to keep seeds gatherers and families in the forest they live, love and protect. My inspiration comes from the colors of Brazil’s fauna and flora and the vibe of its people.
