Websites
Elaine's Macrame Instructions - This is an extensive
website with illustrations on a number of macrame techniques which you can use in your hemp jewelry making.
Books
There are not that many books purely on making hemp jewelry, which is surprising given its popularity.
But there is one that is really good that is called
Hemp Masters: Ancient Hippie Secrets (Amazon link). Kind of a silly title but it's thorough and
well illustrated. It covers tons of knots from the basics described here to very complex knots. It has
patterns and projects to make as well - if you are wanting to delve deeper into hemp knotting, this
is the book I'd recommend. What I found most helpful was that it illustrates a number of different ways to finish off
hemp jewelry, mostly using purely knots.
I would also recommend the book Making Beautiful Hemp & Bead Jewelry, it has some really cool project ideas.
There are also a number of books out there on macrame that could easily cross over to hemp techniques.
I know, when you think macrame you picture cheesy 70s plant-hangers - but macrame has come a long way since then.
Macrame means knot-tying, and most hemp knots are from macrame originally. Macrame uses all kinds of fibers, including waxed linen, rattail, cotton cord, embroidery floss, wire, and of course hemp.
Anyway, some books to check out if you want to learn more are
The New Macrame (lots of jewelry projects) and The Macrame Book.
Supplies
Hemp-Sisters
They sell a variety of sizes
and colors (as well as natural beige) of hemp yarn and twine, as well as beeswax and hemp jewelry kits.
They carry a Hemp Jewelry Kit which includes a "Hemp Board" which you can use to help you make jewelry if you're tired of pinning the end to your jeans. They also carry a full line of nifty hemp clothes, soap, and other items made from hemp.
Here is another option for hemp boards/kits.
Da Bead Babe They have some fatty crow beads that work great in hemp designs because they're chunky and big. Go to Glass Beads > Glass Crows & Rollers.
Here's a bigger list of Where to Buy Beading Supplies. And don't forget your local bead shop!
