Directions

Cut a piece of cord that is the length of the finished piece plus 8 inches (about 24 inches total). Thread one side of a clasp onto the cord, and then tie an overhand knot. Clip the thread, leaving a short tail so it won't come untied. You may want to add a drop of glue to the knot to secure it.

Decide how much space you want between the beads. Draw two lines on a piece of paper or card to help you space the beads evenly. Jot down the name of the necklace, and then you can use the card if you make another one.

Make an overhand knot at the first interval, string on a bead, and then make another overhand knot. You may wish to use an awl or a small gauge knitting needle to assist in making the knots snug against the beads. Continue to knot beads onto the cord until the necklace is as long as you want it, and then attach the other part of the clasp in the same manner as the first.
Note: If you plan to make a lot of knotted necklaces, you may want to invest in a tool called the "Tri-cord knotter" which makes this operation faster and easier.

Variations
  • Vary the size, frequency, or type of beads used. Try this: instead of putting just one bead between the knots, put several - perhaps two seed beads and a glass focal bead.
  • Put a large bead at the center and have the beads get gradually smaller on each side.
